Inclusive Development (Swabhalambi Panchayat)

Under the thematic intervention Swabhalambi Panchayat the BVYs will be undertaking the following initiatives

Functional and Financial Literacy Campaign

Many microfinance organizations have expert teams handling matters pertaining to better fiscal management. Volunteers will get an opportunity to interact with such teams in various districts to help the youth better understand the importance of the income they earn and how to manage it.

Savings is another component that can be understood as part of these sessions. Young women will be given special training and advice on these aspects to empower them financially and bridge the economic gender gap.

Employment and Skill Development Camps

Partnerships with organizations such as Odisha Skill Development Authority (OSDA), Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY), Orissa Scheduled caste and Scheduled Tribe Development Finance Corporation (OSFDC) and Odisha Rural Development and Marketing Society (ORMAS) can help build skill training centres for the youth. Here, they can learn various technical skills and be ready for their future jobs. The DDU-GKY funds over 250 trades like retail, hospitality, health, construction, automotive, leather, electrical, plumbing, gems and jewellery etc. Connecting the volunteers in this wide spectrum of skills will be a huge step forward in making the ‘Skilled in Odisha' goal a reality. The increase in the skilled workforce will eventually lead to greater employment across the state. Employers from all over the country will be eager to hire them. The employment of these individuals will provide them with financial help and independence allowing them to take charge of their lives.

Career Counselling

Along with skill training programs and higher education, it is also important for the youth to know various avenues that exist for their future. Professional career counsellors can coach the young men and women on their career choices and give them and idea about the range of possibilities available. It is imperative to convey to them the importance of making their own choices based on their interests and not under any kind of family pressure. Volunteers will be in touch with career counselling centres across the state and connect any interested youth to the available facilities.

Disaster Risk Reduction Campaign

Since Odisha is a disaster-prone state, most of the youth would have already witnessed the challenges that natural calamities bring. This intervention will cater to the needs of the rural and urban youth in terms of how to handle a natural crisis. An expert team of disaster management and rescue operations experts will train the BYVs across all districts on the steps to be carried out during times of emergency. They should also be trained on behavioural aspects of courage, strength and teamwork that can help save lives and reduce the risks involved in such situations.
